Confused about wearing makeup while keeping your lenses in top form? Here are some key makeup do’s and don’ts for contact lens wearers.
Choose ophthalmologically tested products
Some make-up products are specifically made for contact lens wearers and sensitive eyes. Ophthalmologically tested products do not contain ingredients that could cause potential irritation to the eyes. These products are often ‘paraben-free’, ‘fragrance-free’ and/or ‘oil-free’.
You should also be extra careful when using loose pigment eye shadows as this could fall into your eyes. Products such as eyeliner should not be put along the lash line as the product can easily be transferred into the eye.
Put your lenses in first
You should always put your contact lenses in before you do your makeup – this will prevent you from getting watery eyes. Always ensure your hands are thoroughly clean and dry before inserting your lenses.
Tina Patel, our in-house contact lens optician recommends daily contact lenses for those who apply eye makeup regularly. These lenses are designed to be worn once and then disposed of at the end of the day. They are less likely to have any build-up of makeup or bacteria, so they are considered to be a more hygienic option. Some of our most popular dailies are:
Avoid sharing products and make-up tools
Do not share make-up tools and products with others, as this can transfer bacteria and lead to eye infections. This is particularly important whilst using products such as mascara as the brush directly touches the eyelash follicles.
If you’re having makeup applied or tested at a department store, the make-up artists should use disposable tools to apply the product, but if you’re unsure, it doesn’t hurt to ask.
Clean your make-up tools often
Make sure you thoroughly clean your make-up brushes at least once a week to prevent the build-up of dirt and bacteria. You can purchase specially formulated make-up tool cleaners that will clean your brushes of excess products, as well as disinfect them. You can also use a lightly formulated, fragrance-free soap to keep your brushes clean.
